Metaswitch MaxUC: End of life needn’t mean the end of the world - end the uncertainty instead

As the Metaswitch MaxUC solution faces retirement from active duty, users of the solution are under pressure to identify and address issues that will likely arise from its end-of-life status and then chart the right course forward to address them and secure their UC futures. What problems should they be looking out for in the wake of MaxUC’s demise, and what next steps make the most sense? Read on.

As you probably know, Microsoft has announced that MaxUC from Metaswitch will no longer be supported. The comprehensive unified communications solution developed by Metaswitch Networks, which integrates voice, video, messaging, and presence services into a single platform is being brought to end-of-life status.

For users of MaxUC, this presents an immediate problem that can’t be ignored. They’re left with a solution that has neither a roadmap nor a future, with at best uncertain support, and with a potentially unstable and inevitably weaker solution portfolio.

What are the dangers?

Standing still in the face of MaxUC’s demise isn’t really an option – at least not a sensible one, because for users of the solution several potential issues that might start to arise represent serious threats.

With Microsoft discontinuing support users can expect to be exposed to some or all of the following:

  • Security vulnerabilities, because without regular updates and patches, the software inevitably becomes more susceptible to issues, leaving users at greater risk of cyber-attacks, data breaches, and other threats.
  • Compliance issues which for organizations in regulated industries mean that it may become more challenging to maintain compliance with industry standards and regulations without ongoing updates and support.
  • Network compatibility problems because as other software and operating systems continue to update, MaxUC may over time become incompatible with newer technologies, which will end up leading to integration issues and reduced functionality.
  • Lack of technical support from Microsoft will likely make it more difficult to resolve issues or troubleshoot problems that do arise.
  • Inhibited development/stagnation, because at end of life the absence of new feature development means the platform will not evolve to meet changing business needs or leverage advancements in communication technology.
  • Operational risks emerge for companies that count on MaxUC for critical business operations. Problems like system outages or performance issues without ongoing maintenance and support may represent serious or even existential risks.
  • Increased maintenance costs will be inevitable as MaxUC users will have to invest in third-party support services or dedicate internal resources to maintain and troubleshoot the software. Either will be costly.
  • Migration challenges can be expected if or when businesses need to transition to alternative communication platforms, which can be complex and costly processes involving data migration, user training, and potential downtime. (We’ll address how these can be avoided in the next section).
  • Decreased reliability because without updates, the software's reliability will almost certainly degrade, leading to more frequent and prolonged disruptions in service.
  • User frustration due to employees experiencing frustration and decreased productivity due to unresolved issues, lack of new features, and/or the need to learn a new platform if a migration occurs.

The bottom line is that the end of Metaswitch MaxUC leaves its users facing a key decision: what now? Ignoring reality and plodding on with a decaying platform is almost certainly the wrong choice.

Instead, operators should be re-evaluating their communication needs and considering planning for a transition to a supported and actively maintained alternative solution to mitigate the risks outline above.
