Do MVNOs always fish in the right pond?

Growing the subscriber base is a never-ending task for every MVNO. That’s why any overlooked sweet spot in the market is worth paying attention to. Are you targeting small business customers?

You should be. To find out more, read on.

Maybe, maybe not. Why don’t MVNOs launch services and solutions for small businesses?

It’s common knowledge that most MVNOs focus on consumer markets. And why not? In those domains, scale and engagement matter and low-cost eSIMs, brand extensions that support an established name – like a supermarket or bank, a football club, or a particular ethnic group – are a sensible focus when you’re trying to build a subscriber base with hundreds of thousands of customers and aiming for close, active engagement with users that drives revenue for other products.

The consumer market is a well-stocked pond of opportunities to be sure, though you’re competing for fish with a lot of other trawlers already on the water.

Meanwhile, telephony for business customers tends, more often than not to be scale-led too, with Mobile Network Operators focused on larger organisations that require a complex mix of services such as:

  • Connectivity – fibre, SD WAN, mobile
  • Security
  • Storage
  • FMC and unified comms

Again, this makes some sense. The “top” (tier 1) end of the business market (very large companies) is lucrative when you win business. But it’s another pond in which there’s a lot of competition for fish.

There’s another reality lurking under the surface here; recognition that not every business wants or needs this full range of telephony services. In fact, most of the smallest companies don’t!

The majority just want to manage their calls better than they do now, but don’t they know how to achieve that. If you’re an MVNO, you can help them to find out.

Lot of fish (but not so many fishermen)

The majority? That claim is borne out by the numbers. A huge number of companies (opportunities!) are not big. The European Union’s Eurostat database records that in 2024, most companies in the EU business economy, 99.0% (33.2 million), were micro and small enterprises.

In the USA, the pattern is similar. According to research firm Statista, small businesses (those with under 5 employees) number around 12.5 to 13 million firms. Meanwhile, leading analyst house, McKinsey, records small and microbusinesses accounting for 50 percent of global GDP.

In short, small and microbusinesses account for an awful lot of people and organisations, so there’s a pretty obvious conclusion thrown up by these numbers.

The small business market is a sizeable pond, well stocked with fish, and generally, far fewer trawlers competing for a haul

If MNOs don’t want to fish in this particular pool, why can’t you as an MVNO…if you’re able to make the right offer to prospective customers?

Waiting to be reeled in?

And you can (make the right offer), because for MVNOs baiting the hook to reel in small business customers, the process should be straightforward because there’s an obvious problem that MVNOs can help them to solve.

This: in the majority of companies with 1-5 employees, multiple telephony devices are typically in play (personal and company), yet no relationship exists between them.

Indeed, devices may well have accounts with different service providers, with the result that cost control is entirely absent. These companies don’t want, let alone need, expensive and complex telephony solutions; they just want things to work better than they do now.

The above should, as you might expect, be good news for MVNOs because it means there’s a large pool of prospective customers who want mobile-first solutions that solve their business challenges but without new systems, tools or devices.

They want integrated solutions and, ideally, solutions that are fully aligned with network evolution – so they won’ be disrupted when MNOs update their networks.

In other words, a service that should be straightforward for MVNOs to provide (as we’ll see shortly). But what might be the rewards for landing these small business fish?

  • Higher ARPU – including airtime – when compared with consumer packages
  • Recurring revenue, with stickier customers less likely to churn
  • Ongoing innovation and brand enhancement
